Bab el-Mandeb disruptions threaten Bangladesh trade and energy

Bangladesh's import-export trade and fuel supply face mounting disruption following expanded Houthi control over Yemen's Red Sea coast, Mokha port and Perim Island in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on Sunday.

The escalation forced cargo vessels to reroute around Africa's Cape of Good Hope, adding 7,500 kilometres, extending transit times by 15 to 30 days and pushing freight rates up by 40% to 50%. Local shipping representatives said a Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation fuel tanker took nearly 50 days to arrive from Saudi Arabia via the detour, incurring up to $4 million in additional operational costs.

According to National Board of Revenue data, the affected maritime corridor carries $46.45 billion in annual trade, representing 77% of national exports and 39% of Bangladesh's total foreign commerce. BGMEA Senior Vice-President Inam-ul Hoque Khan Bablu said foreign buyers may shift freight burdens onto local apparel manufacturers, while delayed textile shipments from Turkey and Africa threaten export production schedules.

The maritime bottlenecks intensified energy pressures as imported Murban crude jumped to $119.46 per barrel and Brent crude reached $104.61 per barrel amid disruptions in both Hormuz and the Red Sea. Former caretaker government special assistant M Tamim said authorities must act immediately to expand refined fuel reserves, while economists urged the government to secure alternative energy suppliers and accelerate domestic solar power adoption.

The 11-nation BRICS group adopted the New Delhi Declaration at the 18th annual summit in India on Saturday, calling for calm in the Middle East and cooperation to protect global trade, supply chains and energy flows.

Overcoming previous diplomatic divisions over the Middle East, the consensus document urged maximum restraint regarding ongoing regional hostilities and condemned unilateral tariffs that distort international trade.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, visiting India for the first time in seven years, urged the bloc to oppose protectionism, while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said emerging economies must shape future global regulations.

The declaration subsequently backed expanded United Nations Security Council representation for developing countries and urged member states to increase local currency usage to reduce reliance on the US dollar.

Bangladesh has set a target of attracting an additional $5 billion in United States investment over the next five years, Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir said on Saturday.

Speaking at the 30th anniversary programme of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh, Muktadir said bilateral trade currently exceeds $13 billion, with AmCham member companies contributing over 20% of national tax revenue from investments exceeding $5 billion. He said chamber leaders discussed the investment proposal with the prime minister, pointing to the prompt administrative resolution of licensing disputes for Corteva Bangladesh as evidence of government support.

US Ambassador Brent T Christensen said the bilateral Agreement on Reciprocal Trade will lower tariffs and advance labour standards, adding that a May agreement positioned the United States as a primary partner in energy investment. AmCham President Syed Mohammad Kamal said the government must provide a clear energy roadmap to establish predictability for incoming investors.

Karnaphuli Export Processing Zone completed two decades of operations, generating over $14 billion in cumulative exports and attracting $787.33 million in total investment by August 2026.

The industrial zone was established on 209 acres of the defunct Chittagong Steel Mills, which shut down in 1999 with Tk 980 crore in liabilities following cyclone damage and technological obsolescence. Initiated by then commerce minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, the land was transferred to the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority before Prime Minister Khaleda Zia inaugurated the facility in September 2006.

The facility expanded from 174 workers to nearly 80,000 direct employees, with women comprising 60% of the workforce and operating companies disbursing Tk 235 crore in monthly wages. Across 258 fully allocated plots, enterprises manufacture diversified products for global brands such as Nike, Adidas and Uniqlo.

Addressing a discussion marking the zone's two-decade transformation on Saturday, KEPZ Executive Director Mahbub Ahmed Siddique said strategic proximity to Chattogram Port and investor confidence drove sustained expansion. With all industrial land fully occupied, the zone currently hosts over 40 operating companies from 13 foreign nations alongside five upcoming industrial units.
