Quader, six others sentenced to death over crime against humanity

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Tuesday sentenced Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and six other political figures to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July 2024 uprising.

The other six convicts are former state minister for information Mohammad Ali Arafat, AL Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, its General Secretary Moinul Hossain Nikhil, Chhatra League President Saddam Hussain and its General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan.

A three-member tribunal headed by Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury ordered the confiscation of half the assets of five of the convicts to compensate affected families through the July Foundation.

According to the prosecution, Quader, as AL general secretary and a cabinet minister, exercised command and control over law enforcement agencies and armed cadres of the AL, Jubo League and Chhatra League [now banned] to violently suppress the quota reform movement that began on July 1, 2024.

The prosecution alleged that more than 1,400 protesters were killed and over 25,000 were seriously injured in widespread, systematic and targeted attacks on the civilian population carried out with the accused’s knowledge and involvement.

Roughly 30 minutes after the judgment, a crude bomb exploded outside the main gate of the High Court around 1:00 pm, prompting an investigation by Shahbagh police with no arrests immediately reported.

Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, rejected the judgment, saying the expedited trial was politically motivated and conducted in absentia without due process, asserting that the proceedings violated fundamental principles of international human rights law.

Committee names Asif Nazrul sole decision-maker of T20 pullout

A government inquiry committee named former interim government youth and sports adviser Dr Asif Nazrul as the sole decision-maker behind Bangladesh pulling out of the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup in India.

The three-member committee, headed by Youth and Sports Ministry Additional Secretary Dr AKM Oli Ullah, found that national players were willing to play but were forced to follow the directive.

Committee member Barrister Faisal Dastagir at a press conference at the NSC conference room on Tuesday that the interim administration was responsible for the withdrawal, which led the International Cricket Council to replace Bangladesh with Scotland.

Asif Nazrul defended the withdrawal on social media, questioning why the ministry investigated the matter months later after he had repeatedly accepted responsibility. He said the boycott was triggered after bowler Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the Indian Premier League under external political pressure, describing the treatment as humiliating.

Nazrul also said security concerns regarding players and supporters justified the stance, and that Bangladesh acted to protect national dignity on equal terms with India.

Moody's upgrades Bangladesh outlook to 'stable'

Moody's Ratings upgraded Bangladesh's credit outlook to “stable” on Tuesday, affirming its long-term issuer rating at B2 as political and external pressures eased.

The agency said reduced political uncertainty supported the revision, with foreign exchange reserves recovering to $32.9 billion by mid-2026. Moody's projected real GDP growth to reach 4.3 per cent in fiscal 2026-27, driven by formal remittances and a flexible exchange rate regime.

Structural vulnerabilities persist as debt interest payments absorb nearly 30 per cent of revenue, and banking non-performing loans stand at 32.8 per cent, requiring recapitalisation costs of 10 per cent of GDP. However, deposits grew 12 per cent year-on-year to March 2026, indicating challenges remain solvency-related rather than liquidity shortages.

Maintaining sovereign currency ceilings at Ba3 and B2, Moody's said continued engagement with the IMF remains vital to anchor external financing and structural economic reforms.

Bill Gates highlights AI unpreparedness as US leaders reject pause

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said governments worldwide are "way behind" on artificial intelligence readiness, calling for urgent international cooperation to address risks regarding employment, biosecurity and public welfare.

According to him, no national government is sufficiently equipped for the technological shifts ahead, adding that his foundation will spend $1 billion over the next two years to expand equitable access.

US President Donald Trump dismissed AI safety concerns as a "hoax" and a "sick conspiracy", rejecting mounting demands from technology executives to introduce strict regulatory guardrails. Trump said existing executive powers remain adequate to keep companies in check, saying any domestic slowdown would only benefit China in the race for global supremacy.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson also rejected a moratorium on artificial intelligence on Tuesday, saying that pausing development would surrender America's competitive edge to Beijing. Johnson said tech companies should self-regulate alongside independent auditors, adding that leading artificial intelligence executives will attend a consultative meeting at the White House within the week.

The government has initiated plans to establish a specialised police cyber security unit to tackle digital crimes across the country, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Tuesday.

Presiding over the 21st Board of Governors meeting of the Police Staff College in Mirpur, Ahmed said the unit will be headed by an additional inspector general of police. He said the specialised division will create a permanent framework, consolidating operations currently handled across the Criminal Investigation Department, DMP cyber unit and Police Headquarters.

The minister said the government will bring in foreign trainers to boost professional skills, utilising personnel with academic backgrounds in engineering and information technology to develop master-level instructors.

The meeting also reviewed proposals to build a dedicated research and innovation centre under the college, alongside making mandatory training a priority criterion for postings and promotions.
